Following the successful launch of Missoma's first retail store in London's Covent Garden, we at Alter/d were delighted to continue our partnership with the beloved jewellery brand for their expansion into Leeds. This new location presented a unique opportunity to adapt and evolve the established Missoma retail experience, bringing their signature layered aesthetic and community-focused approach to a new audience in a vibrant city.

Bringing the Missoma Magic to Leeds: A New Chapter in Retail Design
Building on Success, Embracing a New Context
Our design process for the Missoma Leeds store was informed by the learnings and successes of the Covent Garden flagship. However, we also recognized the importance of creating a space that resonated with the specific character and energy of Leeds. This involved:
Understanding the Leeds Customer: While staying true to the core Missoma brand, we considered the local customer base and their preferences, aiming to create a welcoming and engaging environment for them.
Integrating the Store's Location: We took inspiration from the architectural nuances and the overall atmosphere of the chosen location in Leeds, ensuring the store design felt both distinctly Missoma and organically connected to its surroundings.
Evolving the Design Language: While retaining key elements of the Covent Garden store, we explored opportunities to refine and evolve the design language, introducing subtle variations that reflected the new context.
Core Design Principles: Continuity and Adaptation
Our approach to the Missoma Leeds store was guided by a desire for continuity with the established brand experience, while also embracing adaptation and innovation. Key design principles included:
The Art of Layering, Revisited: Just as in Covent Garden, the concept of layering remained central. We designed display systems that encouraged exploration and showcased how individual pieces could be combined to create unique personal styles.
Fostering Community Connection: Creating a welcoming and interactive space where customers could connect with the brand and each other remained a priority. The layout and design aimed to facilitate engagement and personalized service.
Balancing Minimalism and Warmth: It was crucial to maintain Missoma's signature aesthetic of contemporary minimalism with warm, inviting touches. The material palette and lighting design played a key role in achieving this balance.
Key Design Elements in Leeds
While sharing the core DNA of the Covent Garden store, the Missoma Leeds location featured specific design elements tailored to its unique context:
Adaptable Display Solutions: We implemented flexible display systems that could be easily reconfigured to showcase new collections and adapt to different merchandising needs.
Enhanced Consultation Areas: Recognising the importance of personalised service, we focused on creating comfortable and well-lit consultation areas where customers could receive styling advice and explore the collection in detail.
Optimized Flow and Navigation: We carefully considered the store’s flow to ensure a seamless and intuitive shopping experience for visitors.
Bringing the Missoma Experience to a New City
The Missoma Leeds store represents an exciting step in the brand's retail journey, bringing its distinctive jewellery and personalized styling experience to a new city. By building upon the success of its Covent Garden flagship while thoughtfully adapting the design to its new context, we aimed to create a space that feels familiar to existing Missoma enthusiasts and welcomes new customers in Leeds.
